Reformation and Counter-Reformation
By the 1500's, the Catholic Church under the Medici popes was facing a lot of criticism and hostility (indulgences, corrupt clergy, use of torture, expensive art and buildings, and charges that the Church was straying from
Christ’s and God’s true message).
The Reformation and Counter-Reformation saw 4 ways of reacting to religion:
a. Beginning a new religion that would be ‘closer to God’s true message’. Example: Martin Luther
b. Beginning a new religion that was religiously a lot like the Catholic Church but stripping it of all its non-religious power and wealth. Example: Henry VIII
c. Insisting that there was just 1 true Church - the Catholic Church - and changing it to deal with the worst of the criticisms. Example: the Counter-Reformation.
d. Working for both sides of the religious dispute - these are people who change allegiance to whoever is in charge at the time. Example: some Renaissance artists and politicians such as Michelangelo and Machiavelli.
1. Choose 1 of the 4 groups (it may be either the group you believe you would have joined or the one you can argue for the best).
2. You need to justify your choice of which ‘side’ you chose to join by explaining both why you joined it and why the other choices were not as good. You will need to use specific examples from the past to support your answer.
3. The project is individual. You may choose your manner of presenting the information as long as you follow the guidelines below:
a. Written - essay, diary, letter to the editor, etc. 300-600 words.
b. Presentation - slide show and talk, soliloquy/speech, skit, video made by you, etc. 3 to 5 minutes
c. Pictorial - comic strip, drawings, etc. 2 to 4 standard sheets of paper used
